Motor Insurance - Commercial vehicles

This heading covers many different types of vehicle, including, for example, private hire cars, taxis, coaches, fire engines, vehicles carrying goods and mobile cranes. Although insurance is required for all of these, the conditions and premiums depend on particular individual circumstances. This Section deals with goods-carrying vehicles and the hiring of cars.

Goods-carrying vehicles

The basic comprehensive policy for commercial vehicles provides unlimited cover for third-party claims for death or injury, but limits the liability for third-party claims for accidental damage, fire and theft to ABOUT £1,000,000. Higher cover can, usually be obtained for an extra premium. Excluded in these policies is insurance for injury to the insured; medical expenses; loss, theft, or damage to personal belongings and travel abroad, though Continental cover can usually be arranged just as for private cars (see Section 16). In contrast to the private car policy, commercial vehicle insurance cannot normally be extended to cover third-party risks while the policyholder drives another vehicle. However, it does usually allow driving of the insured vehicle by a licensed driver driving with the permission of the policyholder, except where the vehicle is used for hire or reward.

Where you use your own private car to transport goods, or in some other connection with your trade or business, you can usually extend your private car insurance policy ( 200).

Do not use your car for trade purposes without first informing your insurer and making sure that your policy covers all the ways your car will actually be used - otherwise you may find that a claim is refused. If you have an accident while using your own car for business purposes, your employer may be liable for claims against you. Employers should, therefore, insure to cover their liability in such cases.
